It was almost 10pm on a Thursday in February in Hasselt, Belgium and while the weather may be cold and dreary this time of year, that couldn’t be said of the spirit among our Selligent crew. It was after all, pizza time; our local team there already powered through the first five or so hours of our second annual Selligent Marketing Cloud hackathon.

Back in Silicon Valley, we were readying for a Thursday happy hour and February birthday celebrations that afternoon. A good excuse for our participating engineers to also take a much-needed break – with a full night of hacking ahead.

Silicon Valley is known for its innate desire to solve problems, do things better, faster and cheaper – and ultimate just get stuff done. If anything is proof to the global nature of this spirit, it is that strain of innovation, creativity and drive exemplified by our 13 hacker teams across the globe.

Our CEO John Hernandez kicked off this year’s festivities with an energetic message of support – albeit a bright and early 8am for us in the Valley that morning – encouraging everyone to flex their minds and creativity over the course of the next 24 hours.

The company reconvened the next day via Zoom – with viewers from across six global time zones – to watch the 13 teams pitch and demo their projects within a record-breaking four-minute slot – one full precious minute less than last year. That alone is a feat.

A select panel of judges picked one overall winner while employees around the world also got to vote for a Viewer’s Choice. It turns out, we were all globally-aligned and picked the same winner: Project Tornado, with the team rebuilding one of our platforms using only public cloud services. Congrats to Project Tornado and all our participants for another successful hackathon in the books!
