Web applications as fast as traditional applications

Gosselies, 18 April 2006 - By playing the SOA platform card at the start of 2000 and coupling it at applications level with AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML), Selligent (a Belgian company that has become one of Europe's leading CRM developers) made a winning gamble. This is because these two technologies make it possible to develop web applications that are as user-friendly and as fast as those that execute on a computer. They are integrated in the completely new Selligent X@ 7.10 CRM suite.

'SOA was one of the most promising architectures at the time. We opted for modernity when building our family of CRM software packages on this service-oriented platform. AJAX supplemented this strategy wonderfully by settling performance problems that were experienced when we wanted to use dynamic web applications. Today, the SOA/AJAX combination offers Selligent X@ 7.10 users and administrators a solution that enables them to benefit from web solutions that are as quick and functionality-rich as local applications', says Thierry Téchy, CTO of Selligent.

With AJAX, designing interactive applications that run on any web browser and do not discourage the user due to slowness is now possible. These applications exchange their data with the web server via the SOA services architecture and offer the comfort and speed of a traditional client/server application. The secret: AJAX technology makes it possible to store page display and layout information in the browser cache memory. Only the data is transmitted in XML format and merged on the client terminal. The result? The program runs like a local application, with performance enhancements that can reach up to 30%. And developers can allow their creativity to flow by adding functions without having to make use of 'plugins' in applications that will be compatible with any browser!

Maximum availability
For its part, the SOA architecture permits maximum availability on the server side and greater scaleability than with a traditional 3-tier or client/server architecture. In this architecture, each applications server operates as a set of web services that is independent of the others. If a user makes a request, it sends the desired information to make itself available immediately once this transmission has been executed. With the SOA-AJAX couple, the server receives the client request and sends the desired data in the form of an XML flow which will be merged by AJAX at the browser level and displayed on the client terminal, thus freeing up the server instantly.

By integrating AJAX, Selligent has proved its capacity to anticipate evolution, and thus to offer the best options and technological standards in its CRM suite.
